The ASOBAGRI co-op was founded in 1989 by 20 K’anjob’al Mayan coffee and cardamon farmers seeking better social and working conditions. ASOBAGRI is incredibly diverse, representing 70 different indigenous Mayan communities across the northwesternmost departments of Guatemala. The Café Femenino Guatemala Program began in 2005 when women coffee farmers first organized in order to receive fair compensation for their essential role in Guatemala’s coffee industry. Despite initial barriers including an ingrained cultural stigma against women meeting without men, the women have worked tirelessly to grow Café Femenino Guatemala. This coffee is grown on farms owned and operated by women producers located in the isolated Huehuetenango region of Guatemala.
